Retrouvailles

Reunion

After 2 months in Thailand, it was time for us to cross the border to Laos to meet there Mel's father. By chance, the virus wasn't expanding too much yet in France and Asia (excepting China of course) and Gildas was able to arrive without issue at Vientiane Capital City's airport, on the 29th of February 2020.

After we reunited with some french and belgian specialities (croissants, french fries and beers), it was time to show "typical" Asia to Gildas. After visiting some temples and the city for one day we already drove to Vang Vieng. 10 days pass by very quickly ! Of course at that time we didn't know how long we were gonna spend in this country, but that's another story...

Vang Vieng

Aaaah Vang Vieng and its beautiful hills... We never got tired of the sunsets at the Magic Monkey, our future favorite guesthouse (but once again, it's another story !)

With Gildas, we came across every points of interest of the city : blue lagoons with day rental scooters, steep hike to a viewpoint, refreshing river next to a camping outside the city and most of all reunited around some drinks at the end of the day !

We also had the chance to fulfil one of our dream : a flight in a hot air balloon ! Thanks to the deserted city (no chinese or coreen tourist!), we got away for very cheap (70$ each) and flew away for a sunrise... that was late in coming! Despite the lack of sunshine, the view was very beautiful and the light sensation of flying was fantastic!

We left Jacky for a few days at the camping in order to go even further north, to Luang Prabang. The road being reputed a rather difficult type of "hairpin bend with big death hill", if you follow us from the beginning you know that we don't like it too much, so we preferred to take a mini-van and enjoy a few days in a hotel.

Luang Prabang

In the end, we only stayed 2 nights in Luang Prabang, Gildas prefered the mood of Vang Vieng. As we were already missing Jack we agreed ! But we still had time to rent some scooters and visit the best spot : the Kuang Si Waterfalls. A series of turquoise pools surmounted by a rather high and impressive fall that we had all to ourselves until noon. The very colonial city is very nice to walk around and its night market made of fabrics and crafts from the ethnic groups of the north is to fall for!

Nam Ngum

Before taking back Gildas to the airport, we spent 3 days at Nam Ngum, a reservoir a little bit south of Vang Vieng. For the first 2 nights, we showed him the joys of wild camping (and to sleep in our 4-star hotel on wheels while we broke our backs in the tent!) when we realized we were in fact in a merchant maritime crossroads where small boats were unloading coal all day long and... cows at night! But it was a beautiful spot.

But for his last night, Mel's dad came out on top and paid us a night in a great luxury hotel! We had never been in such a luxurious place (bathroom overlooking private garden, terrace on the other side overlooking the floating pool in the water, etc.) and we enjoyed the heck out of it! Thank you Gildas ! We met a nice Belgian couple at the bar next door that we promised to meet again a few days later... in Vang Vieng!

Aller retour

Back and forth

After dropping Gildas off at the airport, we spent a night in Vientiane before spending a few days at Bob's, a Canadian living in Laos for years that we met via facebook. We had the nice surprise to see a huuuuge 18-ton truck... owned by Jean-Claude and Sarah, a French-Mauritian couple who had lived in India for 3 years and had built their big rig there before starting their journey. We spent 3 days there eating, talking about adventures and cuddle Bacon (Oh and drinking a lot of beers too...) before going to Nam Ngum at the very nice Christophe's animal refugee for a night before meeting our Belgian friends in Vang Vieng. The initial plan was first to help a Belgian bar (they are everywhere!) in Vang Vieng to build a henhouse in exchange for food for a week before going to visit the south to slowly reach Cambodia but... CORONA. So, after a great evening with Cynthia, Pierre-Antoine, Loic and Julie and a visit to Magic Monkey, we started looking for a spot in the middle of nature and we decided on a whim to go back to Vientiane to join Marco and Anja, a Swiss German couple traveling in 4x4.
